Pritchard and Edmunds Family History

Moulescomb, home of Henry Edmunds

Moulescomb, the home of Henry Edmunds from c.1913-1927

This is the family history of the Edmunds family of Halifax, West Yorkshire and the Pritchard family (originally from Middlesex). The Pritchards travelled to Australia in 1839 on the SS Hooghly and settled in Adelaide.

John Joseph Pritchard, my husband's father returned to England in the 1930's as a Rhodes Scholar to study at Magdalen College, Oxford . He married Muriel Edmunds on the 9th May 1940.

May 4th 2004-2007 marked an important day in our family history. It was the centennial celebration of the meeting between the Hon.Charles Rolls and Henry Royce who were introduced to each other by my husband’s great grandfather, Henry Edmunds. Henry was an enterprising and entrepreneurial man, born in Halifax in 1853. Much of his story is known and a biography was published called “The Godfather of Rolls-Royce” by Paul Tritton in 1993 .

Family names on the Edmunds side include: Edmunds, Pagden, Wayman, Hatton, Wigney and King Sampson, with links to America and Australia.

Family names on the Pritchard side include: Pritchard, Cooper, Cousins, Durant, Wallis and Richards. Most of this work has been done by Bill Pritchard in Adelaide and includes the Pritchard family beginning in Middlesex, emigration to Australia and back again to England.

Mangan and Chadwick Families

For the last few years I have been researching my husband's family background and now I have started my own. Names include Mangan (Mangham), Chadwick, Verney, Childerstone and Bishop. This is in the very early stages of research and pages will be added in due course.

HELP NEEDED.

Looking for information on Daniel H. Mangan. On the 1901 census he was visiting the family of George and Annie Mangan in Pendleton, Lancashire. He gives his age as 19 and was a Private in the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment and place of birth was Sheffield, Yorks. So far I have been unable to trace him in the birth indexes. The only possibility was a Daniel Mangan whose birth was registered Dec 1884 in Chorlton, Lancs. Is this the same person? Was he bending the truth to get in the army? He is visiting a family with the same surname. What is the link?

Problem solved at last!! 10/9/2009 following a letter from my father's cousin, Ian McCann.

He mentioned that Daniel Henry Barrett, Annie Mangan's brother was born 18/9/1881 at Norroy St, Sheffield. It was a nudge to check things again and the only possible conclusion I can come too is that Daniel's name was entered incorrectly on the 1901 census when he was visiting his sister in Pendleton, Lancs. I have added a note on ancestry.co.uk to make it easier for other researchers.

A descendant of Daniel Henry Barrett sent the following several years ago,

......"Daniel Henry Barratt enlisted on the 21st April 1900 into the 3rd West Yorks and was appointed Lance Corporal on 6/9/1901. He served in S.Africa. He was part of the Honour Guard at Queen Victoria's funeral. Between 1914-1919 he was a Provost Sergeant in the military police in the 3rd West Yorks.. "

It sometimes takes time for the penny to drop!
